Laboratory Studies of the Formation of Methanol and Other OrganicMolecules by Water+Carbon Monoxide Radiolysis: Relevanceto Comets, Icy Satellites, and Interstellar Ices

چکیده
Radiation processing of cometary, planetary, and interstellar ices has been investigated by irradiating mixtures of H2O and CO near 16 K with 0.8-MeV protons. IR spectroscopy and isotopic substitution showed that H and OH, from H2O, added to CO to form HCO, H2CO, HCOOH, and CH3OH. A values (integrated spectral absorbances) for HCOOH and HCO trapped in H2O ice were measured for the first time. These new values, along with published A’s for H2CO and CH3OH, were used to calculate radiation yields (G values) and conventional percentage yields. Significantly higher percentage yields of HCOOH and CH3OH were observed, compared to previous solid-state H2O+CO experiments. This suggests that radiation processing may help explain the discrepancy between the observed gas-phase abundances of small organic molecules and the abundances predicted by current theoretical models and previous laboratory experiments. In contrast to previous experiments on one-component ices, no spectral evidence for long-chain molecules was found in the present work. This demonstrates that ice composition is a critical factor in applying laboratory results to cometary, icy satellite, and interstellar ices. c © 1999 Academic Press

Understanding the Kinetics and Dynamics of Radiation-induced Reaction Pathways in Carbon Monoxide Ice at 10 K
Carbon monoxide is the second most abundant molecule on icy grains in the interstellar medium. It also exists on Pluto, Triton, comets, and possibly in other icy bodies of the outer solar system like Kuiper Belt objects. With the intense radiation fields that permeate virtually all unprotected regions of space, carbon monoxide ices can be processed through energetic particle bombardment (planet...

Pure ices of amorphous methanol, CH3OH(X 1A0), were irradiated at 11 K by 5 keVelectrons at 100 nA for 1 hr. These energetic electrons simulate electronic energy transfer processes that occur as interstellar ices, comets, and icy solar system bodies are subjected to irradiation fromMeV ions and secondary electrons produced in this process. The results were analyzed quantitatively via absorption...
متن کاملInfrared and reflectron time-of-flight mass spectroscopic study on the synthesis of glycolaldehyde in methanol (CH3OH) and methanol-carbon monoxide (CH3OH-CO) ices exposed to ionization radiation.
We present conclusive evidence on the formation of glycolaldehyde (HOCH2CHO) synthesized within astrophysically relevant ices of methanol (CH3OH) and methanol-carbon monoxide (CH3OH-CO) upon exposure to ionizing radiation at 5.5 K. The radiation induced chemical processes of the ices were monitored on line and in situ via infrared spectroscopy which was complimented by temperature programmed de...
متن کاملTHz and mid-IR spectroscopy of interstellar ice analogs: methyl and carboxylic acid groups.
A fundamental problem in astrochemistry concerns the synthesis and survival of complex organic molecules (COMs) throughout the process of star and planet formation. While it is generally accepted that most complex molecules and prebiotic species form in the solid phase on icy grain particles, a complete understanding of the formation pathways is still largely lacking. To take full advantage of ...

We investigated the formation of two C3H2O isomers, i.e., cyclopropenone (c-C3H2O) and propynal (HCCCHO), in binary icemixtures of carbonmonoxide (CO) and acetylene (C2H2) at 10K in an ultrahigh vacuummachine on highenergy electron irradiation. The chemical evolution of the ice samples was followed online and in situ via a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and a quadrupole mass spectromet...
